Basic Overview

Marc Braman, MD, MPH, wants to increase health and happiness for many by helping to revolutionize healthcare.  He spent the major portion of his career from 2007-2013 building the national professional association for Lifestyle Medicine -- the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. He was its second President and first Executive Director. Under his leadership the association put lifestyle medicine on the professional map with national conferences, collaborations with other professional organizations, and education and professional development for physicians and other practitioners. Initial efforts toward establishing professional standards led to collaboration with the American College of Preventive Medicine, eventually culminating in the first ever publication in JAMA on lifestyle medicine as the product of a blue-ribbon panel of representatives from multiple specialty societies recommending competencies for all physicians in prescribing Lifestyle Medicine (Lianov, Johnson, JAMA, July 14, 2010).

Dr. Braman now innovates professionally by developing systems and entities necessary for the creation of health care as it could and should be.  A completely new paradigm with new frameworks is critical – see the Clinical Systems on the Lifestyle Medicine Pro website. He continues to practice lifestyle medicine and has directed departments for hospitals, clinics, and his own private practice, working with patients to find "the joy of living well".

Dr. Braman is always seeking to collaborate with those who would effect major change in health and health care for the benefit of patients.  Feel free to contact him to this end.

"Pick and Choose" highlights to use as appropriate for the situation

  • Initiated the concept of “Lifestyle Vital Signs” as a major initiative to put healthcare on a new foundation for “treating the cause”.
  • Developed a professional collaboration with the major professional journal publisher, Sage Publications, and the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine.
  • Participated as a presenter in invited webinars for the AMA in Lifestyle Medicine.
  • Planned, organized, and conducted the first-ever conference on Lifestyle Medicine practice management.
  • Developed a joint project with the MGMA (Medical Group Management Association) focused on evaluating and defining best business practices for Lifestyle Medicine practice.
  • Developed sponsorships for national medical conferences.
  • Developed regular e-content and communications that helped establish Lifestyle Medicine as a scientifically credible and uniquely identifiable field in healthcare.
Dr. Braman continues to support the American College of Lifestyle Medicine:
  • As an editor and presenter of the curriculum content for the Lifestyle Medicine Competencies as published in JAMA.
  • Via the Lifestyle Medicine Foundation supporting public-benefit activities of the College, professional education, collaborating on substantial impact projects, etc.

Lifestyle Medicine Foundation

As President of the Lifestyle Medicine Foundation, Dr. Braman leads the Foundation in high-impact projects to effect change in the kind of care people receive.  These projects include:
  • Creating the website and national expert content that will enable “prescribable” (and trackable/reportable) video-based, scientifically sound content to be accessible to anyone with an internet connection.
  • Creating a common database of primary Lifestyle Medicine science to enable curriculum development, clinical treatment guidelines, inter-disciplinary work, etc. (future)
  • Furthering national-caliber online education in Lifestyle Medicine.
  • Supporting formal board development and certification in Lifestyle Medicine.

Lifestyle Medicine Pro - Supporting change for professionals and practice

To further the practice and practical implementation of Lifestyle Medicine Dr. Braman continues to develop practice support resources, services, and systems through the development of Lifestyle Medicine Pro, LLC.
Dr. Braman also does consulting work for hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare entities.

LifestyleMedicine.com - Supporting real-world implementation of Lifestyle Medicine (future)

In building the cloud-based future for Lifestyle Medicine, Dr. Braman is developing the “shared” online portal for all things Lifestyle Medicine with expert-vetted, curated, medical-grade products and services for disease reversal.  These resources will be “shared” by providers and patients as a fundamental part of implementing “treat the cause” healthcare.

Vitalities - Furthering a Lifestyle Vital Signs system toward formal development and implementation.

PatientsUnited.org - Supporting change for patients

Increasingly involved in patient participation and empowerment to shape and direct healthcare, (including speaking at the Stanford Medicine X conference 3 times).  Dr. Braman believes there needs to be a national patient-representative organization, as well as a complete (and initial) design of a healthcare system with patients at the center.

Scope of perspective

A combination of an intense and longstanding personal interest in all things health, MD training, a Masters of Public Health degree in Epidemiology (the science of medical research), a residency in Preventive Medicine, and a lot of time and energy spent exploring many different professional and clinical perspectives provides Dr. Braman a fairly unique perspective that allows him to see the full scope of healthcare while being able to be more discerning of what is scientifically valid.  Dr. Braman has practiced in Integrative Medicine contexts, and been involved in professional Integrative Medicine implementation endeavors, such as serving on the steering committee of the federally-funded National Coordinating Center for Integrative Medicine Training (getting Integrative Medicine training formally into medical residency programs).

Long-range goal

Dr. Braman’s long-term goal is to develop the healthcare system that could be and should be…the system that he would want as a patient.  This means a system that is very different from our present system and is truly and fundamentally all about what is best for the patient.  It is cloud-based, convenient, easy-to-use, health focused (instead of disease focused), emphasizing prevention and treatment of causation over reactive use of pills and procedures to manage symptoms and consequences, offering all options, has active research built in, and that is owned by, and operated for the benefit of, patients.

To your health and  happiness!
